23. To See or Not To See....
The New York Times had an interesting article yesterday about "Slumdog Tourism", and it provoked comments well worth reading too.

Family vacations often take place in countries with much poverty, but typically visitors see nothing of this -- perhaps just a glimpse, on the way to a resort. And typically a family just wants to relax, enjoy the activities, have together-time.

But sometimes, especially with older kids, family travelers may want to know more of the country-- not just its attractions, but also its reality.

Is this a good thing? The NYT article is critical of "slum tourists"; but as posted comments point out, sometimes getting even a glimpse of real-life can lead to compassion, charitable giving, maybe even participation in projects, and can be especially influential with teen and young adult kids. And alternatively, is it such a good thing to visit a country and see nothing of its social reality?

Another point is that "tourism" implies a person from one world stepping through another with no interaction or meeting-as-equals. So can visitors be less "tourists"? Some organizations promote visits to local schools or NGO's, or even short volunteer experiences. But critics have their say about this too, claiming there's little benefit to "locals" and only a "feel-good" benefit to the visitors.

What's your opinion? You can post comments below.

Granted, most family travel is a "getaway" -- often just four or five days -- rather than an exploration. Still, even young kids do notice glimpses of poverty during their trip. In many places, it's easy to bring along something useful to give to a local charity: a young child can understand a gesture like this. A family can also donate to a country they've visited. Volunteer vacations take things a step further...

If you have experiences or opinions, please share below!

25. Book Now, for Holiday Season...
photo courtesy of Xanterra Parks & ResortsYes, it's true: for popular Christmas events, you should be booking in summer-time. For example: if you want to ride the Polar Express on the Grand Canyon Railway, you should book your seats now -- and this advice probably holds true for other Polar Express train rides too. (These rides recreate the experience of the classic children's book.)

Likewise, if your family want to party at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party -- a popular event at Disney World -- tickets are already on sale, with the first Party starting up November 8th.
